You're not going to believe this... I noticed that every time we drove around the city, we go in these crazy loops. It turns out that there are very few places in Moscow where you can make a left turn! No joke. You have to drive around in circles (right circles, of course) to get anywhere. You can't even cut across the street to park. Yesterday we had to go around the entire Kremlin to park on the opposite side of the street.

hmmm... what's the rationale?

Couple notes on this one... Recently had a friend share a letter that someone shared about his dad. In it, the dad suggested that part of the reason for his living so long was that he and his wife refused to make left turns. They had read in their younger years that most accidents occur w/people making left turns. Anyway, it was a very heartwarming story, and it was interesting given your observation.
Second - The left turn is probably the most disruptive of driving activities. The system is set-up for everything to flow nicely for right handed/sided-ness. The engineer in me definitely sees some intelligent rational here. As long as you've got an area where everything is in nice/neat blocks, I could see where removing left turns may actually improve traffic. I also suspect this is a big reason for the gaining popularity of round-abouts, many now showing up in Colorado. The round-about concept basically removes the left hand turn. Instead of turning left through on-coming traffic, you merge slight right into the round-about. Continue in a circle until you get to the street, then make a slight right off of the circle onto it.
